Community care apartments for seniors in Bedok to be launched this year
About 200 of them will be launched following good feedback in 2 previous projects in Bukit Batok and Queenstown
SINGAPORE - Around 200 community care apartments in Bedok will be available to seniors aged 65 and above this year, to help them age independently in their silver years.
The third project of its kind is in response to positive feedback to the first two pilots of assisted living flats in Bukit Batok and Queenstown, said National Development Minister Desmond Lee on Thursday (2 March) in Parliament during his ministry's Committee of Supply debate.
Minister of State for National Development Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim further elaborated on the new project, saying in Parliament that residents in these upcoming Bedok flats will enjoy convenient access to nearby amenities, such as active ageing centres, markets, fitness stations and community gardens.
Other features of these apartments include wheelchair accessible bathrooms, a personal alert button in toilets, a communal space for activities and dedicated care staff to provide assistance whenever necessary.
The government is developing a pipeline of community-care apartment projects in other locations across Singapore, and will provide more details later this year.
Three new sites for shared rental HDB flats for singles
Dr Faishal also shared that the Joint Singles Scheme Operator-Run scheme will be expanded to three sites – Bukit Panjang, Bidadari and Sengkang. These new sites will offer spaces for about 600 tenants and is expected to be open for application by the end of 2023.
Launched by HDB in December 2021, the scheme allows singles to apply for a public rental flat individually without having to find a flatmate
The three current projects in Bukit Batok, Buangkok and Bedok of about 400 tenants are close to being fully occupied.
Dr Faishal added that the government “will continue to learn from this pilot, and find more ways to improve the lives of singles in public rental”.
