Consumers not impressed by the Apple Watch

Only one in ten consumers said that they would definitely be buying Apple's first wearable technology device.

That is according to Tolunda QuickSurveys. It polled over 1000 US consumers about their first impressions regarding Apple's new iPhones and Apple Watch and discovered that while the company's latest handsets have hit the mark, consumers are not impressed by the Apple Watch.

Only 10 percent of those polled within 24 hours of the Apple launch event said that they would definitely purchase the Apple Watch. However, 43 percent said that they would definitely not be buying it and a further 23 percent that said that they probably wouldn't be buying it.

Of the respondents, only 9 percent of whom currently wear a smartwatch, 22 percent said that they thought the Apple Watch's best feature was its size, while 14 percent went with its health-tracking features - 12 percent liked the fact that it can be customized with different straps ad watch faces.

There were no such problems for the iPhone, however, with the smaller 4.7-inch model proving the most popular. Over half (53%) of all respondents said that they were impressed by the first impressions the phone had made, and 68 percent of existing iPhone owners who took part in the survey said that they would be buying an iPhone 6.

But which one? It turns out that consumers were more impressed by the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 than with the 5.5-inch iPhone 6+. When asked about favorite features, faster wi-fi (15%) came top, proving more popular than having the option of a 5.5-inch screen (12%).

As such nearly two thirds (63%) of the consumers who are definitely buying a new iPhone are plumping for the smaller model.

The Apple Watch won't be launching until 2015 and even then it will be sold exclusively in the US to begin with. Over the remaining months of 2014 Apple is expected to continue improving its first watch, adding features and improving its battery life. However it has high immediate hopes for its latest-generation smartphone, which goes on sale next Friday. Apple expects to sell 80 million handsets over the next 12 months.
