Coronation Street airs Griff’s surprising move in alt-right storyline

Coronation Street's Griff has pulled a vile move in his extremism storyline, continuing spreading racist misinformation in Weatherfield.
In tonight's (December 8) double bill, Griff (Michael Condron) confronted councillor Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) in the street over her proposal to help refugees.
She stood in stunned silence, later meeting with Alya Nazir (Sair Khan) to go over her ordeal. Maria confided in Alya that she was too shocked to hit back at Griff after he made some racist comments.

Later on, Griff took aim at Maria's policies with Ed Bailey (Trevor Michael Georges), claiming she was only trying to bring voters on her side with her liberal positions.
Ed didn't entertain his attempts to bond and hit back at Griff after Dee-Dee (Channique Sterling-Brown) informed him about the man's alt-right beliefs.
Meanwhile, Stu (Bill Fellows) tried to get more information about Griff, asking him about his past in the military. When Griff dodged Stu's questions, the latter sensed something was off and told Alya about his suspicions.

She went to see Griff and his pals next, threatening to let people know about his lies as well as his discriminating behaviour and language.
The paralegal didn't let Griff's smugness stop her and did call his workplace which immediately fired him. Enraged at having lost his livelihood, the builder called Spider Nugent (Martin Hancock) – who works undercover to bring the organisation down – to organise a meeting with his alt-right group.

Angry, Griff paid an unexpected visit to Alya in her office, determined to make her pay for what she'd done. Luckily, Spider arrived to deescalate the situation. Griff left, but not before telling Alya she "owed" him as she was the reason he'd lost his job.
Scared, Alya decided to keep her head down for a bit so Griff would leave her alone. As she was helping at Speed Daal, she noticed Griff and his pals were just outside in an attempt to intimidate her.
In the final scenes, Alya looked for Griff in Victoria Gardens, telling him she wouldn't let him win.
"Threaten me at work again, you’ll regret it," she said.
Griff continued making racist remarks and joking about her late father. Furious, Alya elbowed him in the face.
Griff saw the incident as an opportunity to further feed his extremist narrative. He promptly recorded a video of his injuries, claiming to having been attacked by a gang of Muslim men.
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
