Coronation Street airs police twist for Simon ahead of exit from show

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street has aired a shocking police twist for Simon Barlow ahead of his exit from the show.

Monday's (January 12) episode centred around the consequences of Simon's recent crash, where Sam Blakeman was injured.

Leanne Battersby had been covering for Simon in front of Nick Tilsley, trying to hide the fact that Simon had been over the legal alcohol limit at the time of the crash.

The latest episode saw Sam showing signs of injury, as he struggled to concentrate on a game of chess with Roy and later was found unconscious on the floor by Hope.

Meanwhile, Nick had started to get suspicious that Leanne was hiding something about the crash, especially after mechanic Kevin Webster made an off-hand comment that his car repairs had nothing to do with the brakes as Leanne had suggested.

Leanne was forced to admit to Nick that she knew Simon had been drinking before the crash, explaining that she didn't tell Nick because she did not want one mistake to ruin Simon's whole life.

"I honestly thought it would be a wake-up call," Leanne explained.

A furious Nick asked: "Why is my son always paying for Simon's stupid life choices? He gets involved in a gang, Sam's in the firing line. They murdered his mum, for god sake!"

Leanne reminded Nick that he'd also had "dodgy dealings" with Harvey Gaskell that put Sam's life in danger.

Luckily, the doctor explained that Sam had no serious damage and he'd be discharged soon from the hospital.

"Chances are, he'll be fine," the doctor explained.

When Nick stopped to pick up medicine on the way home, he was irate to hear from Glenda Shuttleworth that she'd seen Leanne carrying a drunken Simon home from the pub nights earlier.

At the same time, Simon was awash with guilt so he decided to turn himself in to police. It wasn't long before he had to admit he'd been drinking before the crash.

He later arrived home to tell Nick and Leanne he'd handed himself in. He revealed that police had booked him for failing to report an accident.

Nick then admitted he no longer trusted Simon around Sam so he wanted him to move out immediately. Despite Leanne's protest, Simon agreed with Nick and left with his belongings.

The ripple effect of the crash continued when Nick slipped the engagement ring he'd got for Leanne back into his pocket.

The episode concluded with heartbreaking scenes of Simon realising he'd have to sleep rough in Victoria Gardens because he had nowhere else to go.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
