Coronation Street and Emmerdale postponed by ITV following Queen Elizabeth II's death
ITV has revised its planned schedule for Friday (September 9) following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
A statement from the Palace announced the sad news at 6.30pm today (September 8), saying: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon."
As a result, there were changes to this evening's TV schedule. The usual programming, including an hour-long episode of Emmerdale, was replaced with news coverage. Now, ITV has confirmed that neither Coronation Street nor Emmerdale will air as planned on Friday evening either.
Instead, there will be an extended ITV News Special all day in place of shows including Lorraine, This Morning and Loose Women.
Then after further evening regional and national news specials, a programme titled Queen Elizabeth II – The Longest Reign will air at 8.25pm. Presented by Jonathan Dimbleby, The Longest Reign will chart the Queen's historic tenure.
It is not yet known when the postponed soaps episodes will air.
On the BBC, EastEnders was also cancelled on Thursday night and has now been rescheduled to 7pm on Friday, moving to BBC Two. Channel 5's schedule changes for Friday also indicate that Home and Away has been dropped, so that an extended lunchtime news special can be added to the day's programming.
Meanwhile, stars of Coronation Street have been paying tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. The monarch visited the Salford set in July 2021 following the soap marking its 60th anniversary, and she clearly left a big mark on the cast.
David Platt star Jack P Shepherd has shared a photo of the Queen flashing him a wide smile on his Instagram Story, captioning the post: "Rest in peace." While Daniel Brocklebank, who plays Billy Mayhew, posted a picture from the Queen's visit to the Cobbles alongside the caption: "A day I'll remember for the rest of my life. RIP."
Corrie youngster Jude Riordan, who plays Sam Blakeman, shared a drawing of the Queen walking away while holding hands with Paddington Bear – a nod to her Jubilee appearance with the famous bear. "Thank you for everything" was printed on the image.
11-year-old Jude captioned the post: "Rest in peace Queen Elizabeth 2nd. She's all me and my family and most of us have ever known. Sad sad day."
