Coronation Street has confirmed that Toyah Battersby's tragic new storyline will begin next week.

Toyah confides in Nick Tilsley about her past after an unexpected outburst during a trip to a local park.

Next week, Toyah goes searching for Roy Cropper's missing dog Freddie but she spots three amateur detectives digging up a rosebed at the park.

The internet sleuths explain that they saw Freddie digging in the same spot, so they believe that Roy must have buried Lauren Bolton's body there.

Toyah is furious over their lack of respect so she picks up one of the shovels and uses it to smash their car window. The wannabe detectives appear to enjoy the drama as they start filming Toyah.

Nick arrives and witnesses the altercation, so he steps in and convinces Toyah to calm down. With lots on her mind, Toyah bursts into tears.

Toyah later faces the consequences of her actions when the police call at Victoria Court to speak to her.

A distracted Toyah then calls in the flower shop to buy a single yellow rose, but she's cagey when she's asked who it's for.

Later in the week, Nick questions Toyah on her strange behaviour. Toyah insists that she was merely trying to defend Roy's reputation, but when she describes the spot in the park as a "special place", Nick wonders what she's referring to.

In the end, Toyah confides in Nick about how she gave birth to a stillborn baby girl at the age of 19.

Toyah kept quiet at the time and buried the baby in the park – in the same spot where the amateur detectives were causing trouble.

Nick is shocked as Toyah explains that the baby's father was Phil Simmonds, the man who raped her.

When Simon Barlow returns home, he informs Nick and Toyah that the police are now digging up the park – and Bobby Crawford has heard rumours about them finding a body.

News of Toyah's storyline was first revealed in tabloid reports earlier this month. The plot revelation proved controversial with fans, who questioned how it would fit in with established continuity from 2001.

Vicky Entwistle, who played Toyah's mum Janice, also criticised the plot in a post on her X (formerly Twitter) page.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
