Coronation Street star Antony Cotton shares unused storyline for Dylan

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Antony Cotton has revealed that he pitched an alternate way to bring Sean Tully's teenage son Dylan Wilson back into the show.

Dylan was reintroduced to Weatherfield in 2020 and is currently taking centre stage in a school bullying storyline involving Liam Connor.

In a new chat with Digital Spy and other press, Antony explained that it was his idea to reintroduce Dylan and have young actor Liam McCheyne reprise the role following an eight-year absence.

Antony recalled: "The truth is that I wrote a little storyline for Dylan and discussed it with [Coronation Street producer] Iain MacLeod.

"It was going to be some kind of trauma, but not that trauma. We were going to have a medical story where he needed something from someone.

"So the idea of Dylan coming back came from that conversation and partly because Liam, who plays Dylan, is such a brilliant actor. He was in Last Tango in Halifax with one of my old friends Derek Jacobi and so I knew that he was a brilliant actor and he'd continued to be brilliant from being a kid.

"It all came from that about: 'How would we get Dylan back?' There'd have to be a story but I didn't know it was going to be this story, which is obviously a very modern story."

Dylan has joined in with the bullying of Liam as he hopes to impress ringleader Mason Radcliffe. Next week's episodes see Sean discover the truth about his son's behaviour.

The show has also explored knife crime within the plot, as Mason owns a zombie knife and threatened Liam last year.

Antony added: "I've seen coverage on the news about zombie knives and about getting new sentences. So obviously we didn't know that was going to happen when this was storylined six months ago, but that's where we're at.

"I've just filmed a scene talking specifically about zombie knives. We already thought it was relevant when we were filming it in the storyline – which will have been plotted six months ago or even longer – but we're specifically talking about zombie knives, isn't that weird?"

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
