Coronation Street star Elle Mulvaney is staying on the cobbles for at least one more year after signing a new contract.

The actress, who plays Amy Barlow, has shared she's staying in Weatherfield for more storylines in the coming year. Mulvaney has been playing the role of Amy since she was 8 years old, first appearing on the series in 2010.

"I signed for another year. It's such a wonderful thing to be able to go into work and just love your job, even still after 13 years," the actress told The Sun.

"What more could you ask for, a job that you love with people that you love, with great stories. I've got such great role models," she continued.

She had kind words for her co-stars, giving a shout-out to soap legend Bill Roache, who has been playing Ken Barlow since 1960.

"The people I'm around are just brilliant actors and actresses," Mulvaney said. "When you look at people like Bill who plays Ken, he's been there for more than 60 years!"

Amy has been at the centre of some hard-hitting storylines in the past few months. Earlier this year, her character was sexually assaulted by her flatmate Aaron Sandford, who insisted that the encounter had been consensual despite Amy being unconscious at the time.

The harrowing incident led to a legal fight between the two teens, with Aaron never being charged due to lack of evidence.

A distraught Amy discussed her experience on her social media in a blog post and was subsequently sued for libel by Aaron. The guilt-ridden character played by James Craven ultimately dropped the case and left Weatherfield.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
