Coronation Street star Lucy Fallon explains struggle after quitting Bethany role

Coronation Street star Lucy Fallon has opened up about her struggles to find work after quitting the role of Bethany Platt amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The actress was reported last month to be returning to the ITV soap, having exited three years ago in January 2020.

Appearing on podcast BTS With…, Lucy admitted that her initial exit was "was potentially the worst possible decision [she] could have ever made," explaining that she "struggled" when things opened back up.

"We went into full lockdown in the March, which I feel like in a way, it did me a few favours in the way I could kind of get away from that character and not have the pressure that I needed to be doing something – because nobody was doing anything," the star said.

"The worst question that you can get asked when you aren’t working is, 'What are you doing now? What are you doing next? What TV show are you going to be on now,' as if it just kind of works like that.

"I think even though lockdown was horrendous, I sort of enjoyed that time in a way – just not having to worry about the fact people were going to ask me that question.

"But then I think it also killed me that I was probably on a bit of a high when I left Corrie, and then lockdown sort of fizzled that out."

The star went on to admit that she "struggled to kind of find [her] place in the auditions" when lockdown started to lift.

"My agent at the time then started to find where she fit me, then everything just started to fall apart a little bit, in terms of work and acting," Lucy continued.

"I’ll be honest, I have struggled, it’s been hard – and I think that the main reason is because we were in a global pandemic."

The actress's return scenes as Bethany will reportedly air next year, with the star set to begin filming in the next few months.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
