Coronation Street star Rob Mallard breaks silence on Bethany's return

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Rob Mallard has spoken out about Bethany Platt's shock return to the soap.

Bethany (played by Lucy Fallon) and Mallard's character Daniel had a brief romance – however, Bethany ended things when she left Weatherfield to pursue a job opportunity in London. Fallon is due to return to the role in the coming months.

Daniel has since moved on and coupled up with Daisy Midgeley, who, unknown to him, has sparked up an affair with Ryan Connor.

Mallard has opened up on the return of Daniel's former flame – and what that might mean for his future with Daisy.

"She left him and he didn't want her to go, he was devastated when she did," the actor said.

He added that there was "unfinished business" between the pair – Bethany felt that Daniel was still grieving for his late wife Sinead Tinker when she declined his marriage proposal shortly before leaving Weatherfield.

"And because there was she Sinead association, she was there at the end, even though rather shamefully involved, there's that unfinished business between them," Mallard continued.

"I don't think he ever expected to see Bethany again, he's seen her getting articles published in magazines so as far as he's concerned she's off living this life that they both wanted so why would she come back to Weatherfield?

"So when she does I think he'll be immediately taken back to that time when they were together and maybe realise this was really nice."

Delving deeper into Daniel's growing suspicions about Daisy and Ryan's connection, he added: "Maybe he'll see that Daisy isn't the be-all-and-end-all and maybe there is hope with other people.

"Although at the minute he can't see that while he's in it, he's in too deep right now and all his fight is going into holding onto Daisy."

Fallon recently confirmed she was back on set and filming for the role, saying in a social media video that she was "very excited" and "a little bit nervous" to return to the show.

"A little bit nervous," she continued, adding: "I can't wait for you all to see what Bethany is up to," she added.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
