Coronation Street's Catherine Tyldesley flooded with support amid husband’s health scare

Former Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldesley has been flooded with support from fans, after opening up about her husband's recent health scare.

The actress – who played Eva Price in Corrie – revealed that her husband Tom Pitfield recently found a large lump behind his nipple, and went to the GP to have it checked out.

"Naturally, when you find a lump anywhere, as much as you try not to - you worry," Catherine wrote on Instagram. "After a scan and an ultra sound the GP still wasn’t sure what we were dealing with.

"So Tom needed a biopsy. I myself found a lump a few years ago (thankfully it was nothing) but the breast specialist @jamesharvey.breastsurgeon was incredible and extremely thorough. So I was reassured when Tom was under his care.

She continued: "The wait was painful as always. One of my male pals had breast cancer many years ago. I knew it was rare, but it happens. Tom had no idea that men could even get breast cancer.

"Thankfully Toms results came back and it was a #Gynaecomastia. Which is actually quite common in Men. We are so relieved."

Catherine went on to say that the experience made her want to raise awareness about breast cancer in men.

"It has come to our attention that most men don’t even realise it’s a possibility," Catherine penned. "Yes it’s rare but it’s absolutely worth checking your pecks Fellas!!

"Symptoms are same as for women. Most commonly a lump. Could be distortion, bloody nipple discharge. Check your pecs lads!"

Fans praised Catherine for using her platform to spread awareness about the disease, with many sharing their personal experiences with breast cancer.

Last April, Catherine and Tom welcomed their second child, a daughter named Iris Ella.

Explaining how she and Tom chose the name, Catherine told Hello! magazine: "I've had the name Iris for years. A while back, I played a character called Iris Moss in the BBC drama Lilies and I have loved it ever since then." Iris' middle name Ella is a tribute to Tom's late grandmother.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
