Coronation Street's Gemma Winter-Brown receives warning over Joseph

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Gemma Winter-Brown has received a shocking warning over Joseph's care in Coronation Street.

The boy has been in the hospital this week after Gemma accidentally poisoned him with lavender oil, leading to a child protection officer investigating the family.

In Friday's (December 1) episode, the rest of the Winter-Brown family were celebrating Christmas early because Bernie will be in prison over the holiday period.

The mood was anything but cheerful when a guilt-ridden Gemma returned from the hospital with Chesney and Joseph in tow.

The family were joined by an unexpected guest as child protection officer Caitlin wanted to interview Gemma about the circumstances surrounding Joseph's hospitalisation.

Once the family had cleared out, Gemma tried to explain to Caitlin that the whole ordeal had been an unfortunate accident.

Caitlin explained to Gemma that it was her job to figure out whether Gemma was telling the truth, or whether she'd purposely tried to poison the child.

Gemma couldn't believe it as Cailin explained that she'd either have to temporarily move out of the house while the investigation continued, or Joseph would be taken into care immediately.

These upsetting scenes are building up the return of Jacqueline Leonard as Linda Hancock, the maternal grandmother of Chesney's son, to help care for young Joseph.

Producer Iain MacLeod recently told Digital Spy: "Joseph's fairy godmother turns up in the shape of Linda. She decides that she's going to fix all this and starts throwing money at the situation, which puts Chesney and Gemma in this impossible quandary – in that by accepting financial help from Linda, they're giving up control of Joseph's life.

"They feel: 'This is our son and we should be making these decisions'. It doesn't feel right that Linda is wading in with her chequebook and saving the day. But on the other side of it, they have to prioritise what's right for Joseph, who is having a hard time and could do with the support."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
