Coronation Street's Jodie Prenger addresses legendary co-star's exit

Coronation Street star Jodie Prenger has shared that she is "really, really gutted" about Helen Worth's exit from the soap.

Earlier this month, it was announced that the Corrie icon would be leaving her role as matriarch Gail Rodwell after 50 years.

Since the announcement, there has been an outpouring of love and support from Worth's fans and colleagues, including Prenger, who explained the "loss" she felt.

The actor, who plays Glenda Shuttleworth, gave an insight into what it was like working with the "Corrie legend".

Speaking at the Television and Radio Industries Club (TRIC) Awards, Prenger shared: "She's lovely and grounded and everything you want a Corrie legend to be.

"It's a massive, massive loss but she's one of these iconic women that have paved the way for other women to come and surround her."

She added: "She'll be a great loss, but I hope we can carry the torch for her."

In a statement, Worth explained her reasoning for leaving the show, adding that she had made the decision at the start of the year.

"This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.

"I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew," she continued.

"The past 50 years have flown by and I don't think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet."

Worth will begin filming her exit storyline in July, which will then be aired at the end of the year.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
