Coronation Street's Max Turner is further manipulated in extremism story

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

A new, hard-hitting Coronation Street storyline for Max Turner is now underway – and Griff continues to work on the youngster, as he plans to get him to join their extremist group.

Max is currently being targeted by an extremist and racist group who are attempting to radicalise him. David has warned Max to be careful around Griff in particular. Meanwhile, undercover police officer Spider is working to try and take the group down.

In scenes due to air on ITV next week, both Max and Daryan start their new jobs at Speed Daal. But Max doesn't have the best start when he collides with Daryan, which leads to a pile of cutlery crashing down onto the floor.

When Max talks to Lauren about it, she takes his side to help win him over to the extremists, telling him that it's clear that his bosses are favouring Daryan at his expense.

Later in the week, Alya offers Max and Lauren a free meal, but Lauren feigns illness and heads home, lying to Max and falsely claiming that Daryan made a move on her.

After that, Griff to make his move – his plan is to order Max to watch a film so that he can be 'educated' about the extremist group's way of thinking.

Griff then uses cash to help him out by offering a troubled Max £200 to help him promote a talk he's giving at the community centre. Will Max accept the money from Griff?

"Max's story is one about the grooming of a vulnerable teenager at a point where he's feeling most alienated and disenfranchised," Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod said of the dark storyline.

"The story will encompass the 'traditional' recruitment techniques of extremist groups, and we'll see Max befriended in person by older, mentor-like figures that will give him a sense of loyalty and brotherhood.

"Then, later in the story, we will explore a very 21st Century problem: teenagers self-radicalising through watching extreme content online. In the end, we wanted this to be a story about communication within families."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and streams on the ITV Hub.
