Coronation Street's Sally Dynevor explains death fears in Stephen story

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street's Sally Metcalfe fears her husband Tim has been murdered next week, as the Stephen Reid serial-killer storyline comes to a head in tense scenes.

Upcoming episodes see Stephen target Tim after the cabbie uncovers the remains of Teddy Thompkins in the local canal.

With the net closing in on Stephen, word starts to spread around the Street that he appears to have killed three people. As Sally realises that Tim is now missing, she develops a disturbing theory that he could have become victim number four.

Sally Dynevor, who plays Sally, recently caught up with Digital Spy and other media to chat about the storyline.

What happens on the day of Sally and Tim's anniversary next week?

"Sally wants a nice dinner and a nice evening with Tim. Tim decides that he's going to cook Sally this really lovely meal with all of these special ingredients in it, so Sally's very excited about this.

"Elaine is going out for the night so it's just the two of them and Sally thinks it's going to be wonderful – but then Tim doesn't turn up."

Sally and Tim have been arguing, so does she suspect that he has stood her up?

"Yes, Sally is worried that Tim has let her down. Kevin has brought round some VIP football tickets, which Elaine tells Sally after Tim has disappeared. Sally can't believe it, she's like: 'Oh my God, he's let me down on our anniversary'.

"Sally is really upset about it. The tickets have gone, so in Sally's mind Tim has gone to the football with Kevin. She's livid and she rings him up and says: 'Don't bother coming home, you've ruined our anniversary'.

"Elaine can't believe it either, so she suggests that Sally should come along to Ken's birthday party at the Bistro. Those were great fun scenes to do because it's all the older cast – we were all sat round this long table for Ken's birthday. I really enjoyed that day – it was so much fun.

"Of course, Sally can't enjoy this time because she's just so upset with Tim for supposedly letting her down and going off with Kevin. Tim doesn't come home either, so Sally thinks he must have got really drunk and stayed out with Kevin. This is all going through her mind."

How does Sally react when she later finds out that Tim didn't go to the match with Kevin?

"It's worrying because Tim would always get in touch with Sally. She thinks: 'He would have rang me at this point if he was hungover'. It's the next day and Sally is really worrying, asking: 'Where is he? Why hasn't he got in contact with me? Where's his phone?' Sally just doesn't understand what's happened at all.

"It's only when Sally is in Roy's Rolls with Gail that Elaine comes in and says the Platts have all been chatting and Stephen has murdered people that he didn't get on with. It clicks with Sally and she goes: 'Oh my God, he never got on with Tim…'"

What happens when Sally learns that a body has been found at the canal, which viewers will know is Teddy?

"Sally, Gail and Elaine hear about the body at the canal and decide that they're going to take a walk and see what's going on.

"After the visit to the canal, they go to the police and tell them everything they know. They ask: 'Is that body Tim's?' Sally comes out with it and says: 'You have to tell me, he's my husband'.

"But the detective says: 'No, it's not your husband because he's only been missing a couple of nights and this body's been in there a while'. So there's a bit of relief but Sally has no idea what's happened."

With Tim still missing, does Sally worry that he got too close to the truth about Stephen?

"Yes, definitely. Everything's coming together and Sally is definitely starting to worry about whether Stephen is involved in Tim's disappearance, but she's got no idea what's going on.

"Sally has always liked Stephen. She's been saying to Tim all along: 'He's a nice guy, I work with him, I don't know why you dislike him so much'. Tim really hated him and has tried to dissuade his mum from going out with him, but Sally could never see that – she just sees a really nice guy.

"As time goes on, there does come a point where Stephen goes missing too and everyone's worried about what he's done and who the body in the canal is. All of those things suddenly come to light and Sally sees Stephen for what he is, but I'm not sure she knows whether Tim is with him or not."

The police later find Tim's blood-stained wallet near the canal…

"Yes, it's Tim's wallet that Sally got him for their anniversary. Sally is really worried and she believes Stephen has got something to do with this. She's also still confused by it all: 'What happened? Is he still alive? Has Stephen got him?'"

The storyline involves the whole Weatherfield community. How was it to work with everyone on it?

"I love this story, I've loved it right from the beginning. I think it's been brilliant and the fact that it has involved so many people on the Street and we are a community looking for Stephen when he tries to go on the run.

"Stephen has been involved with everybody in the factory, with the Platts, with Jenny, now with Sally and Tim. He's got involved in everyone's stories, which is wonderful to be a part of.

"I love those collaborating stories where we all come together. They're the best stories for me when the whole Street is involved with one thing, so that has been so much fun to be involved in."

What has Todd Boyce, who played Stephen, been like to work with?

"It's funny because when you're walking round a supermarket, people say: 'Oh my gosh, that Stephen, I hate him, he's awful'. I just have to say to them: 'Look, he's one of the nicest men you will ever meet'. He's lovely, a very beautiful man and it has been a pleasure doing any of the scenes with him.

"Todd is also very knowledgeable. He's done so many things – he was in one of my favourite films, which was about the base camp of Mount Everest, so every time I've done a scene with him, I've been like: 'Oh tell me about that film you did when you were in the Himalayas'.

"He's a lovely man to talk to about anything and he'll be really missed. He's been a really lovely part of the cast. When you get an actor like that who joins the cast, it's really sad when they leave because you've got this relationship with them, but I think he'll just go on to do wonderful things because he's fabulous."
