Coronation Street's Simon Gregson discusses new direction for Steve

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street star Simon Gregson has weighed in on a possible new direction for Steve McDonald following his split from wife Tracy.

As viewers will know, Steve's marriage recently came crashing down after he discovered Tracy was having an affair with former footballer Tommy Orpington, with Tracy vowing to move on with her new relationship rather than fix her marriage.

Upcoming scenes will see Tracy change her mind and decide to give her relationship with Steve another go. However, their reunion is short-lived with Tracy ultimately deciding to move to Spain and be with Tommy after he accepted a new coaching job over there.

With Tracy seemingly standing firm in her decision to be with Tommy, Simon is hoping to see Steve explore the world of dating as he gets back on his feet.

"I think it would be great if we see Steve having to go down the route of speed dating, online dating," he suggested, adding that he would also be happy to see Steve stay single "for a while" and focus on looking after himself.

"Steve could have a full on mid life crisis, maybe we could see him losing weight, changing his appearance, going to the gym," the actor said.

"It could be a lot of fun and also a great excuse for me to make some changes in real life!"

In terms of who he'd like to see Steve date next, Simon said he'd be equally happy to see his character find romance on the cobbles or be introduced to a new character.

"I think anyone will do," he added. "At this point in Steve's life he'd be lucky to have anybody!"

Gregson also shared his thoughts on Steve's mental state following Tracy's affair, saying that Steve is "devastated" that Tommy would do this to him.

"He gets why Tracy is attracted to Tommy, but he’s just so upset that his idol has done this to him," he said. "I think there’s so much going on at once that he’s not properly put it together yet."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
