Corrie confirms Bernie's sentence in devastating Christmas story

Coronation Street has confirmed Bernie Winter's devastating prison sentence, as Bernie receives the heartbreaking news that she will be spending Christmas in jail.
Bernie recently landed herself in trouble with the police, after she was caught out for her involvement in the late Shelly Rossington's scam, in which she sold electronics illegally.
Although Bernie only became embroiled in the scam because she wanted to help raise money for equipment to help son Paul Foreman live with his Motor Neurone Disease (MND), her good intentions will backfire hugely when she receives her punishment.

In new scenes airing next week, Bernie's family are devastated when she is sentenced to three months in prison. When Bernie is told that she must serve at least half of her sentence, they realise that this will mean she misses Paul's last Christmas.
After receiving the shock news, Bernie's furious daughter Gemma Winter-Brown lures Bernie's selling accomplice Big Garth to Victoria Street.

Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod recently shared further details about the tragic Christmas storyline with Digital Spy and other media, explaining that it has been important for the soap to properly "show the day-to-day progression of illnesses like Paul's".
"You always need a story to have on top of that, so we're always very keen to keep that family busy," he added. "The medical story is always going on, but like we all have to do when we're ill, they're contending with catastrophes that are nothing to do with the illness at all."

Despite Bernie's predicament, and the prospect of the family being separated over Christmas, MacLeod promised that the festive period will be "poignant" and "bittersweet".
"It's a fitting, funny but poignant last Christmas, with that fantastic family at the centre of it all," he said.
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
Coronation Street has been working on Paul's storyline with support from the MND Association, which focuses on improving access to care, research and campaigning for people affected by motor neurone disease.
