Corrie shares next stage of Tommy Orpington's return story

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street has revealed the next steps in Tommy Orpington's return plot, as he reconnects with Tracy McDonald again.

Tommy was last seen on the cobbles on Christmas Day, when the former footballer showed up at the flower shop to buy a last-minute gift and was served by Tracy.

Their paths will cross again in scenes airing next week, as Tracy experiences a disappointing birthday. When she unwraps her present from husband Steve, she is underwhelmed to discover a cherry stone pillow.

Chucking the pillow back at him, Tracy tells Steve that she wants their bedroom to be redecorated, and that he can start on it today.

When Tracy moans to Mary Taylor about how lazy Steve is, and how she doubts he'll ever get round to the decorating, Mary suggests that she should hire a professional instead.

Soon, Tracy is showing Tommy, who is now a decorator, into No.1, where he reveals that he's a retired footballer who played for Weatherfield County.

When Steve returns home, he's stunned to find his hero standing in the living room. Tracy quickly tells Steve that they've hired Tommy to do the decorating and that Steve is banned from distracting him.

How will Tommy's presence affect Tracy and Steve's home life?

Tommy, played by former Hollyoaks and Emmerdale star Matt Milburn, first appeared in the soap in 2016 and has made several guest appearances since, with his recent Christmas return marking his first scene since 2021.

Coronation Street's producer Iain MacLeod teased to Digital Spy and other media in a press call last year that Tommy's return will cause some drama among Weatherfield's residents.

"A story evolves where this attractive, historically successful man arrives into one of our female character's lives and upsets the apple cart in fairly spectacular fashion," he said.

He added that Tommy's storyline will be "very funny" and "potentially quite sad in certain places", saying: "It triggers something really big for us over the next 12 months, a big new direction for some characters."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
