On this episode of 1K Dream Room, host Will Taylor (@brightbazaar) travels to Brooklyn to give Gustavo and Matthew’s drab living room a lively makeover. Gustavo and Matthew love their light-drenched apartment, but they don’t love how impersonal their largely undecorated living room feels. They’re hoping Will can help their directionless living room feel more like a home. Can Will transform Gustavo and Matthew’s living room into the room of their dreams? Let’s find out!

Will begins by selecting several pieces of new furniture for Matthew and Gustavo. He chooses an oak media stand with plenty of shelves for books and magazines, a modern white bookcase, a fuzzy white faux sterling accent chair and a low circular coffee table.

He notes that, while you might be tempted to choose all low furniture to make your small space feel larger, alternating between different heights of furniture can actually make your space feel bigger and less monotonous. “Think about a low media unit, and then go for something taller like a bookcase,” Will recommends. “That’s gonna make your room feel much more dynamic.”

Next, Will begins decorating. He selects a cheerful peel-and-stick moon wallpaper to create an accent wall behind the couch. He also chooses linen curtains to add some extra coziness to the room. Then he picks a series of smaller items to pull the space together, including framed artwork, a wavy pink vase and matching wavy candle holder.

Choose a visual motif to make a room feel cohesive

Will explains that a great way to make your room feel more cohesive is to simply pick a visual motif and repeat it throughout the room. “So here in Matthew and Gustavo’s living room, what I’ve done is I’ve taken this subtle wave detail from the vase. You’ll see I’ve then repeated it in the candlestick, and I’ve also then used it in the artwork,” he says. “The key to success, though, is to make sure that the repetition mixes in scale and size so that it feels cohesive and not flat.”

Finally, it’s time for Gustavo and Matthew to see their brand new living room! When they enter the room, the couple is blown away. “Oh my God!” they both exclaim in unison. Gustavo is particularly excited about the color scheme Will has selected, which perfectly balances pastels and neutrals, while Matthew loves how cozy the space feels. “So beautiful,” Matthew concludes. “We love it.”
