Courteney Cox Recreates Her Iconic Moment in Bruce Springsteen’s 'Dancing in the Dark' Video

The 59-year-old actress shared her entry in the popular "How would you dance to this song in the ‘80s?" social media trend — and it’s a tough one to beat.
In the clip, shared Sunday, June 9, Cox begins with the typical text, “Asking my mom how she danced in the 80’s,” and the typical song, Bronski Beat’s “Smalltown Boy,” before putting her own special twist on it.

As the star begins dancing to the ‘80s synth-pop track, she appears uncomfortable, shaking her head like something’s just not clicking.
After an abrupt record scratch, the Friends actress unzips her jacket, revealing a shirt nearly identical to the one she wore in the music video for Bruce Springsteen’s hit “Dancing in the Dark.”
The synth is swapped with the Born In The U.S.A. track’s upbeat intro, and Cox quickly finds her stride, stepping right back into the 1984 music video, in which Springsteen, now 74, sees the actress in the crowd and pulls her up on stage with him.

Clad in white shirts and blue jeans — it was a Born In The U.S.A.-era Springsteen show, after all — the actress and The Boss then dance together, mirroring each other’s moves as the track slowly fades out.
And, in her new video, the Scream star proves she hasn't missed a beat in three decades, picking up her '80s moves like no time has passed.
The recreation is also quite the surprise, as Cox previously told PEOPLE she would only bring back her music video dancing "as a joke," noting, “That was not good dancing on my part."

Courteney Cox and Bruce Springsteen in "Dancing in the Dark"At the time, “Dancing in the Dark” was Cox’s biggest role, as she had only “done two days on a soap opera and a New York telephone ad,” she revealed on Off Camera with Sam Jones in 2017.
Recalling her audition for the Brian De Palma-directed music video, the star said, “I walked into this big casting room and all these dancers were there. … And I was like, 'I don't think I'm in the right place because I can barely touch my toes.' ”

Though her dancing may have been awkward, it was what De Palma was looking for. Soon after, she found herself on stage by Springsteen — who thought she was just a fan at the time — at the Minnesota concert where the video was filmed.
“I think that’s why I got it,” she said on The Howard Stern Show in 2022. “I think that’s what they wanted, a fan that just couldn’t believe it.”
