"As Covid-19 cases rise, it is best to stay safe"

There was a massive crowd at the Kuala Lumpur Sports City in Bukit Jalil yesterday. More people are expected to gather today and tomorrow, and this is indeed worrying.

The on-going men’s Junior World Cup (which ends on Dec 16) is being hosted at the National Hockey Stadium, while the Malaysia Cup final was played at the nearby National Stadium, last night.

Malaysia’s Madani government’s three-day ‘One Year Anniversary Programme’, held near both stadiums and the Light Rapid Transit (LRT) train station, started yesterday and ends tomorrow. There is also the All Stars Gegar Vaganza concert at the Axiata Arena scheduled tomorrow and 1km away, a newly opened hospital is organising a fun run and carnival.

Over 80,000 football fans witnessed the Malaysia Cup final between Johor Darul Ta’zim and Terengganu FC, and thousands more are expected to throng the Madani celebration, and enjoy discounts offered by police for traffic offences, while hockey fans are expected to catch their favourite teams in action.

After spending half a day in Bukit Jalil yesterday, I am worried there will be a ‘Bukit Jalil cluster’ as most people were not wearing face masks, and there was no social distancing. Some wondered why I was ‘double masked’.

Although Malaysia is no longer in the pandemic stage, Covid-19 is still around, and there was a 57.3 per cent increase in cases (3,626) in the 47th Epidemiology Week from Nov 19-25. In that same period, Singapore recorded 22,094 new infections.

Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) president Dr Azizan Abdul Aziz had urged Malaysians to maintain a healthy lifestyle to strengthen their immune system, and to follow pandemic protocols – wash hands frequently with soap and water, or use a hand sanitiser, and wear face masks, and avoid crowded areas.

The only consolation was that nearly all the vendors followed health protocols, and wore face masks.

I bought a bottle of mineral water from one of the “errant” ones and asked him why he was not wearing a face mask.

He replied: “Panas lah bang! Lagi pun, I sihat” (It is hot, and I am in good health).

When I told him about the rise in cases, he shrugged his shoulders and said he had had his vaccine and two booster shots. Many still think having the vaccine makes one immune to the coronavirus, when it only prevents the symptoms, or side effects, of Covid-19.

On the train to Bukit Jalil, not many passengers were wearing masks.

I was lucky that I left for Bukit Jalil after the ‘office crowd’, so the train was half empty. It was the same when I left for home.

On a side note, it had been years since I took the LRT to Bukit Jalil from Subang Jaya that I had forgotten how convenient, cheap, and stress-free it was, compared to driving. Traffic was really bad in and around Bukit Jalil yesterday.

The round trip was only RM7.20. I might take the LRT the next time I am heading to Bukit Jalil.

CHRISTMAS ISN’T CHRISTMAS

Bon Jovi has a video for the new original holiday song ‘Christmas Isn’t Christmas’, released a month after the song debuted on Island Records.

After the video release, Jon Bon Jovi said: “‘Christmas Isn’t Christmas’ is a song that I wrote about family.

“The sentiment is that Christmas really isn’t Christmas without YOU, which can bring out a lot of memories for people. I also like to turn it around, and that because of you, Christmas IS Christmas.”

It may be the next holiday favourite.

Until next week, stay safe.
