Creator shares how to get moving boxes for free

A creator on TikTok, Dalila Hurtado (@itsdollhouse), posted a video on Sept. 30 sharing her hack to get all the moving boxes she needed for free.

“I Googled how to get free moving boxes and they said to contact Walmart, Costco or Target,” she says in her post.

Hurtado explains how she called Costco and one of the employees said they could set aside 20 to 30 boxes for her. She also mentions that movers can get boxes on Facebook Marketplace but that they should be wary of sellers charging expensive prices for them.

At the end of the video, Hurtado shows the free boxes she received from Costco, which had been broken down for her.

According to Google shopping, a medium moving box from U-Haul can cost between $1.85 and $1.95. Furthermore, Angi.com estimates that it takes 20 to 40 boxes to pack up a one-bedroom apartment — which puts the cost of boxes between $37 and $78.

Hurtado isn’t the only person who uses cost-effective methods while moving. Several of her viewers also chimed in and shared where they go to get free boxes.

“If you ever need boxes go to stores when they are setting up holidays,” replied @nofx_girl22.

“I’ve never bought a box in my life! Also if you know someone who works at a hospital….ask them,” wrote @keshiae.

Another popular hack some TikTokers have taken advantage of is ordering boxes from the United States Postal Service. Customers can order directly from the USPS website but need to be mindful of which option they choose — as they can make the same mistake as TikToker Ridgex (@ridge.x).

“They come in packs of 10 or 25 and they come in all different types of sizes, so I’m like, ‘Yeah, I need moving boxes. Let me order a couple packs of 10,’” he says in a video.

However, he didn’t read the options properly and placed multiple incorrect orders. Ridgex accidentally ordered an excessive amount of boxes and also unintentionally bought five cremated-remains kits.

“Little did I know, I was doing quantities of eight for packs of 25. … I’m currently sitting in a car with over 500 shipping boxes. … At this point, I might as well pack up my whole life and move away.”
