The Crown season 6 to pause filming out of respect for Queen Elizabeth II
Queen Elizabeth II sadly passed away today (September 8) at her Balmoral estate at the age of 96.
Her 70-year reign makes her Britain's longest serving monarch. Her reign spanned 15 prime ministers and numerous events and scandals, many of which have been depicted in the hit Netflix drama The Crown.
Now with the fifth series in the works, fans of the show are wondering what the Queen's death will mean for the show?
The Crown writer Peter Morgan has said that he expects the series to pause filming.
He wrote (via Deadline): "The Crown is a love letter to her and I've nothing to add for now, just silence and respect. I expect we will stop filming out of respect too."
This isn't the first time a contingency plan has been mentioned in relation to the Emmy-winning show.
Back in 2016 when The Crown made its Netflix debut, Stephen Daldry, director of some of the initial episodes, said (via Deadline): "None of us know when that time will come but it would be right and proper to show respect to the Queen. It would be a simple tribute and a mark of respect. She's a global figure and it's what we should do.
"She's an extraordinary woman and people will be upset."
The Crown launched on Netflix in 2016 with Claire Foy playing Queen Elizabeth II and Doctor Who's Matt Smith starring as the late Prince Philip. Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies took over these roles for seasons three and four.
Series five will feature Imelda Staunton in the lead role and was due to premiere later this year, but it's not yet known if that date will now be pushed back.
Seasons 1-4 of The Crown are now streaming on Netflix. Seasons 1-3 are also available on DVD and Blu-ray.
