Sex and the City stars Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis have recalled how they landed their roles on the show, revealing they were both invited to audition for Carrie Bradshaw.

The iconic role ultimately went to Sarah Jessica Parker, however in an episode of And Just Like That… The Writers Room podcast the pair discussed how they were asked to read for the part.

Davis shared that SATC creator Darren Star already had Parker in mind for the role at the time but asked her to audition anyway, saying: "We really wanted Sarah Jessica…[but] we don’t know if Sarah’s going to do it, so will you read for Carrie?"

However Davis quickly realised that she was better suited for her eventual role as Charlotte York and convinced Star to let her try out for the part.

"The original script, Carrie was much more like Candice and she smoked and she swore," she said, adding that she told Star: "I can’t even read for Carrie. I am this other girl who’s like underwritten but I understand her. I need to be her."

Nixon, who plays lawyer Miranda Hobbes, then revealed that her first audition for Carrie didn't go particularly well. "I auditioned and they were like, ‘Yeah, not so much," she said.

The actress went on to add that she was invited back to read for Miranda, a process which took several months.

Recalling a conversation her agent had with show producers, Nixon said she was told that she was "top of the list" for the role but executives weren't ready to cast her.

However, after months of following up she was finally offered the role of Miranda, with Parker signing on as Carrie soon after. The trio, alongside Kim Cattrall's Samantha Jones, starred in the NYC based show for six seasons.

Parker, Nixon and Davis later reprised their roles for the highly anticipated spin-off series And Just Like That.

Cattrall initially declined to take part in the show, before later agreeing to film a cameo for the upcoming season.

And Just Like That, the sequel to Sex and the City, airs on Max in the US and Sky Comedy and NOW in the UK.
