Czechia extends deadline for phasing out Russian oil

Czechia will get rid of its dependence on Russian oil by mid-2025 at the latest, Checz Prime Minister Petr Fiala said after meeting with management of state-owned Mero company at Nelahozeves Central Oil Terminal, Radio Prague International reported on July 4.

Fiala intends to request abolition of privileges for imports of Russian oil currently used by Czechia as soon as the Italian TAL pipeline expansion project is completed.

It is noted that technological modification of the Italian oil pipeline will be completed by the end of 2024. This will be followed by finishing works and operational tests. According to the Czech PM, 60 years after Druzhba pipeline was connected, Czechia will stop depending on Russian oil.

After the expansion, the TAL pipeline will supply the Czechia with additional 4 million tons of oil per year. This volume will cover consumption of both refineries in Litvinov and Kralupy na Vltava.

Earlier it was reported that in May 2023, Petr Fiala said after signing ceremony of the agreement between the TAL Group, which operates the Transalpine Pipeline, and the Czech oil transportation company Mero ČR that Czechia would completely abandon Russian oil by 2024 after modernization of Transalpine Pipeline.

TAL Group operates the Transalpine Pipeline, which transports oil from the port of Trieste (Italy) to Austria, Germany and Czechia. The pipeline is strategic for oil supplies to Central Europe. It supplies 90% of all oil processed at refineries in Austria, 50% in Czechia and 100% of the oil processed at refineries in southern Germany.

The pipeline has a capacity of about 43 million tons of crude oil per year. In 2021, the Transalpine Pipeline pumped 37.2 million tons of crude oil, in 2020 - 37.6 million tons.

The main shareholders of TAL Group are OMV - 32.26%, Shell - 19%, Rosneft - 11% and Eni (Agip) - 10%.
