Dakota Fanning Reveals the One Birthday Gift Tom Cruise Has Given Her Every Year Since She Was 12 (It’s Super Chic)

The actress, now 30, said her former onscreen dad has always gifted her with a pair of shoes

Dakota Fanning can count on Tom Cruise for a lifetime supply of shoes.

On the June 5 episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the actress revealed what her War of the Worlds costar has been gifting her with since she was a pre-teen.

“Every year on your birthday Tom Cruise still sends you a present. That’s so nice because you worked together so long ago,” host Kelly Clarkson said.

Fanning confirmed the sweet tradition and revealed that the first gift she ever got from the 61-year-old action star, who played her dad on the 2005 alien sci-film, was a Motorola Razr cell phone (although she joked she had no one to call at the time) on her 11th birthday.

It was on her 12th birthday that Cruise decided to step up his gift game.

“He always sends me the same thing every year after the cell phone. I loved shoes when I was little and I started to be able to fit into really small adult shoes when I was on the War of the Worlds press tour, so I was very excited about them. From that birthday on, he always sends me shoes.”

“That’s so nice. That’s so random too. I love it. You must have a massive shoe collection brought to you by Tom Cruise,” Clarkson joked, while Fanning agreed that the gesture is “very sweet.”

Fanning turned 30 on Feb. 23 and celebrated the milestone age in a look that screamed “30, flirty and thriving.”

For the special day, the Watchers star glammed up in a crimson satin Dolce & Gabbana corset dress from the fashion house’s fall/winter 2024 collection. When it debuted, the design was paired with gloves, tights and stilettos. But for her birthday, Fanning put miniature bows in her hair.

She surely entered her new era in style, which reflected how she’s really feeling about getting older.

“I don't know what it is, it's just, like, some of the most happiest,” Fanning told PEOPLE at the Ripley premiere on April 3. “I'm sort of having to do crazy things like schedule-wise and really busy, but I'm totally fine with it. Nothing's bothering me.”

As she’s maturing, she’s learned to be more present.

“I think I just was really focusing on being grateful for what I do have, rather than constantly ruminating on what I don't have yet," she said.
