Dancing on Ice pro skater Vanessa Bauer became overwhelmed with emotion during last night's semi-final, following her and skating partner Joey Essex's heartfelt routine honouring family members they have lost.

Skating to the track 'High' by Lighthouse Family, Joey explained that the performance was not only a tribute to his late mother but also to Vanessa's father, who had passed away last year.

"I did that for my mum, but I also did it for Vanessa," the reality star told hosts Phil and Holly.

"Obviously she's been great support for me and this week's been really emotional. Vanessa lost her dad last year, too."

He added: "Hopefully anyone watching this skate tonight can look at it and smile. There's light at the end of the tunnel."

Vanessa became clearly emotional over Joey's mention of her father, turning away from the camera as she struggled to hold back tears.

Seeing Vanessa's reaction, Holly urged the former TOWIE star to give his dancing partner "a cuddle", before moving on to the judges' feedback.

Earlier in the show, Joey explained how the routine was a tribute to his mother, who died when he was 10 years old.

Adding that he chose the song as it was something which makes him think of his mother, Joey added (via The Sun): "It's a song that's very close to my heart. It's very personal to me and it's always made me remember my mum.

"My mum would be very proud of me. I know she's looking down on me and she will be on Sunday night."

Joey and Vanessa's high judges' scores, however, weren't enough to save them from the skate-off alongside Corrie's Mollie Gallagher and The Wanted singer Siva Kaneswaran.

However, they were sent through to next week's final after the skate-off while Mollie and Siva, along with their respective pro skating partners Sylvain Longchambon and Klabera Komini, were eliminated from the competition.

Dancing on Ice airs on ITV1 and ITVX.
