‘Dancing With The Stars’: Season 32’s Jason Mraz Asked Friends To Not Vote For Him Because He Missed His Cat

Jason Mraz may have come in second place during Season 32 of Dancing With the Stars, but there was a time early in the ballroom that he had hoped to get the boot.

In Tuesday’s episode of the Dinner’s On Me podcast hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, the singer-songwriter admitted that he privately plotted for an early elimination — only because he missed a certain companion.

“Two or three weeks in, I realized I’m probably going to be here the whole time and I’m terrified and I have to cancel all my plans for the entire rest of the year, and I’m missing my cat terribly. And I start telling my friends, ‘Stop voting for me!'” Mraz recalled. “It’s like the only way I can get off this show is if I don’t get enough votes. And I even told the producers, ‘I’m good. I can go home now, thank you so much for the honor,’ and they said, ‘We can’t do anything about you being here.’ So the only thing I could do is ask friends to vote for someone else.”

That, of course, is water under the bridge now, since Mraz showed great improvement while dancing with Daniella Karagach; the duo came in second place to Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy. “Having made it all the way to the very end, made it to the buzzer, I look back and laugh and think, well, maybe if I’d actually given a sh*t! So, I would do it all over again if I could and I would try really hard. Maybe, they’ll have a Dancing With the Stars All-Star season. I would go back.”

Mraz joined Ferguson on his podcast to discuss his latest album “Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride.” It was his music that got DWTS to first take notice of him.

“That’s what ultimately came out of putting a song out called ‘I Feel Like Dancing,'” Mraz said. “The producers of Dancing With the Stars called and said, ‘Hey, we heard you feel like dancing. Are you serious about that?’ And I thought, wow, what an honor. What a great way to learn dancing fast and being in the song game every Tuesday night I got to turn in something — which I still played every week during Dancing With the Stars — but it was the same every Tuesday night. We had to show up on the set and perform our dance that we created and it was the hardest thing ever but so fun.”

Dancing With the Stars has been renewed for Season 33.
