David Copperfield is denying sexual misconduct allegations made by over a dozen women dating back to the late 1980s.

In a statement to PEOPLE, a representative for the 67-year-old illusionist says that Copperfield is contemplating legal action against The Guardian, which published the report on Wednesday, May 15.

The report includes allegations from 16 women, more than half of whom alleged that they were under 18 at the time. The allegations, one of which was previously made publicly in 2018, came from interviews the newspaper conducted with more than 100 people, as well as court and police records.

“Everyone that knows David Copperfield will tell you that these recent allegations from one newspaper are the exact opposite of who David is,” the representative tells PEOPLE. “Most of these historic accusations have been made before, and all of them are as false now as they were then.”

“David requested the ‘evidence’ upon which these false allegations claim to rely and this has not been provided," the rep's statement continues. "By contrast, whenever US law enforcement has looked into such matters, they have been investigated thoroughly and it has been found that there is simply no case to answer.”

"The Guardian’s characterization is not who David is, and he continues to support anyone who has experienced any form of abuse or discrimination," the statement concludes. "David will be considering the position with his legal team and will take such steps as may be appropriate over these false and scurrilous allegations.”

It's not the first time that Copperfield has faced allegations of misconduct.

In 2018, the New Jersey native, born David Seth Kotkin, was accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a 17-year-old minor in 1988 — a claim which came hours after Copperfield called for people to not quickly judge others during the #MeToo movement.

At the time, a rep had no comment on the allegations.
