David Duchovny Would Have 'Loved' to Reprise His Role on “Sex and the City”: 'We Talked About Doing More' (Exclusive)

The actor recalls his experience working with Sarah Jessica Parker on the iconic HBO series

If David Duchovny could have his way, he would have reprised his role on Sex and the City.

During a recent interview with PEOPLE, the actor discussed his experience working on the HBO series. In the season 6 episode titled “Boy, Interrupted,” Duchovny plays Carrie Bradshaw’s (Sarah Jessica Parker) high school sweetheart Jeremy, who is in a psychiatric facility. While Parker is interested in rekindling the romance, Jeremy ultimately tells Carrie it’s best they not pursue a relationship, explaining he’ll be in the facility for the next several months.

While Duchovny explains there was the possibility of him returning to the beloved series, it just wasn’t in the cards.

“We had talked about doing more and never ended up doing it,” he says in this week’s issue. “I would've loved to have done more of that show.”

Acting alongside Parker was a dream, he explains. “We really had an immediate, easy working rhythm. I loved working with Sarah,” he adds.

Besides Parker, Duchovny — who recently launched the podcast Fail Better, produced by Lemonada Media — has worked with a number of talented leading ladies during his decades-long career.

In the 2000 rom-com Return to Me, the actor costarred with Minnie Driver, playing a man who falls in love with a woman who received his wife’s heart during an organ transplant operation. In the years since, the actress, 54, has appeared in TV and film projects like Speechless, Will & Grace and the film adaptation of the musical The Phantom of the Opera.

“I loved working with Minnie. She's got a huge heart, and that comes through in her work,” he recalls. “She's very funny, very talented and underused, I think.”

In Californication, which ran for 7 seasons from 2007 to 2014, Duchovny starred with Natascha McElhone, who played his love interest. He attributes much of the show’s success to the Scottish actress.

“I really enjoyed the balancing act of the absurd comedy that we were doing,” he says, adding, “She really brought the heart of that show, which was necessary to make ballast for the nutty goings-on around us.”

Working with Meg Ryan on the 2023 rom-com What Happens Later was also a highlight. The experience helped him understand why the actress has been so successful on the big screen.

“The first night of shooting, I did a take, and I just remember thinking, ‘Oh god, yeah, Meg Ryan is super charming,'" he said, adding, “I don't say that lightly. I'm in the deepest sense of just like, 'Geez, she's pulling me into an orbit here.’”
