Almost 20 years after its original release, Capcom has announced a remaster of zombie action-fest Dead Rising.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster will come to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series consoles on September 19.

It’s a sprawling zombie game set in a Colorado mall. You have to slice through crowds of zombies to stay alive and rescue the few remaining survivors of the outbreak.

Tweaks for this new version include auto-saving, a refreshed interface, and improved non-player character behaviour. This should make the game more palatable in 2024, because Dead Rising has a lot of escort missions in which you have to lead around survivors with seemingly next-to-zero intelligence.

The original version was released in 2006 and this latest release is the second time Dead Rising has been remastered. A higher-resolution version of the game was released as part of the Dead Rising Triple Pack for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It included the original Dead Rising, Dead Rising 2, and Dead Rising 2: Off the Record.

Capcom seems keen to stress this Deluxe Remaster version does not change the gameplay of the original Dead Rising dramatically.

Instead, it’s a port of the game to Capcom’s RE engine, first used for Resident Evil 7. That engine also powers Dragon’s Dogma 2 and the Resident Evil 4 remake.

The initial teaser trailer suggests not too much of Dead Rising’s visual personality has been changed. However, protagonist Frank West’s hairline doesn’t seem to have aged as well as the 2006 version’s visuals. This change brings the character’s look in line with that of the most popular in the series, Dead Rising 2: Off the Record.

The Dead Rising X account teased this release days before the announcement, which took place during the Capcom Next show. This 25-minute stream also featured footage of Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and the announcement of a version of Resident Evil 7 for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Have you never played Dead Rising before? Superficially, it may look like a silly, over-the-top zombie action game, but there’s more to it.

There’s a huge time management aspect to Dead Rising and it has roguelike elements. Your character starts weak but after each attempt at the game and death, stats can be maintained between runs to offer a better chance of survival as you play.

Rescuing all the survivors and defeating all the game’s psychopath boss characters is quite a juggling feat.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is out on September 19 and will cost £39.99, or £49.99 for the Digital Deluxe edition. It includes a bunch of additional costumes.

There is no news about the game coming to Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus at launch.
