Dean Phillips Ends Presidential Campaign, Endorses Joe Biden

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) has dropped his challenge to President Joe Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Phillips failed to gain traction in caucuses and primaries in his long shot bid. In the Minnesota primary on Tuesday, he drew just 7.8% of the vote in his home state, behind the number of voters choosing “uncommitted,” which garnered about 19%. Biden won the state with more than 70% of the vote.

He wrote on X/Twitter, “I ran for Congress in 2018 to resist Donald Trump, I was trapped in the Capitol in 2021 because of Donald Trump, and I ran for President in 2024 to resist Donald Trump again – because Americans were demanding an alternative, and democracy demands options. But it is clear that alternative is not me. And it is clear that Joe Biden is OUR candidate and OUR opportunity to demonstrate what type of country America is and intends to be.

Phillips had warned about Biden’s ability to overcome voter concerns about his age. But he endorsed the president today. He wrote that “in light of the stark reality we face, I ask you join me in mobilizing, energizing, and doing everything you can to help keep a man of decency and integrity in the White House. That’s Joe Biden.”

Biden lost one race in Super Tuesday results — the caucus in American Samoa. Longshot Jason Palmer won that race.

Marianne Williamson, who suspended her campaign and then restarted it, remains in the race for the Democratic nomination.
