Defendant who leapt over court bench to attack judge in Las Vegas to face her again today

A defendant who was caught on camera launching an astonishing attack on a judge is scheduled to appear before her again in Las Vegas on Monday.

Deobra Delone Redden, 30, launched himself over a court bench and landed on top of the judge before engaging in a brawl with court officials at Clark County District Court on 3 January.

After leaping over the bench he grabbed Judge Mary Kay Holthus by the hair before a courtroom clerk and marshall pulled him off her.

The judge suffered some injuries in the attack but returned to work the next day.

Courtroom clerk Michael Lasso was treated for cuts on his hands and a marshall was treated for a dislocated shoulder and a gash on his forehead.

Mr Lasso was credited as being the "primary person" who pulled Redden off Judge Holthus and "probably kept her from having more severe injuries", said the court's chief judge Jerry Wiese.

Redden was facing prison time for a felony battery charge over a baseball bat attack last year.

He had attempted to convince Judge Holthus he was turning around his violent past and had asked for leniency while describing himself as "a person who never stops trying to do the right thing no matter how hard it is".

But as it became clear Judge Holthus was going to sentence him to prison, and as the court marshall moved to handcuff him and take him into custody, Redden swore and charged forward.

He was jailed on $54,000 (£42,500) bail in connection with the attack but refused to return to court the next day on the new charges.

New charges

Records show Redden faces charges including extortion, coercion with force and battery on a protected person, referring to the judge and officers who came to her aid.

Judge Holthus is expected to continue sentencing in Redden's other case involving the baseball bat attack on Monday.
