Gaby Hoffmann is remembering her time making the 1989 movie Field of Dreams as a child alongside costar Kevin Costner.

In a wide-ranging interview with Business Insider, the actress, now 42, recalled "there was a lot of paternal energy" on the set of the baseball film, which marked her acting debut.

"I didn't have a dad growing up, and there were just so many wonderful men on that set. And Amy Madigan, who played my mother, who I loved so much," Hoffmann told the outlet. "... Ray Liotta and, actually, all the baseball players, I would sit around and play cards with them and play catch with them."

When asked specifically about Costner, who played her dad in the film, Hoffmann simply told Business Insider, "I didn't feel paternal energy from Kevin Costner. We'll leave it at that."

Hoffmann was 7 when Field of Dreams was released, and Costner was 34. The film went on to earn three Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture.

PEOPLE has reached out to Hoffman for further comment on her experience of working with Costner.

The actress, also known for starring in Uncle Buck, Now and Then, and the series Transparent, shared more memories about working with Liotta on the Field of Dreams set, saying, "I just absolutely loved Ray. I was convinced he was in love with me too, which, of course, he wasn't, but he was just such a sweetheart."

Hoffman told the outlet she "never saw him again" after production ended. (Liotta died in 2022 at age 67.)

She added, "I sort of jokingly said I had a big crush on him, but I think I was really drawn to a kind of fatherly, protective energy that he had in spades. What a beautiful actor he was too."

Costner, whose multi-part Western epic Horizon: An American Saga hits theaters this summer after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, played Ray Kinsella in the film, an Iowa farmer who feels compelled to build a baseball field after voices instruct him to.

He told Entertainment Weekly in 2019 about almost not doing Field of Dreams due to a scheduling conflict, as Robin Williams was at one point attached to lead the film.

"When I finally asked [director] Phil Alden Robinson, 'Why did you wait for me? Because I think Robin's really great,' he was like, ‘I do too. But I think that Robin could hear voices in the corn, and I needed a guy that you don't believe is going to hear a voice in a cornfield.' "
