Did Michelle Obama’s Gown At The White House State Dinner Mean More?
Categories Celebrity Style
Michelle Obama stunned at last night’s state dinner in a custom gown (pictured below) by up-and-coming designer Brandon Maxwell. Honoring Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his wife, President Obama and the First Lady were a picture of elegance for the black-tie affair, with FLOTUS making a characteristically sound choice by showing support for an emerging American designer. (Brandon launched his line in 2015 and has made waves thanks in large part to his close relationship with Lady Gaga—whom you may remember he dressed for the Emmys in 2015 to great fanfare.) On the heels of the symbolic Ralph Lauren pantsuit that Hillary Clinton wore for her DNC acceptance speech, the selection leaves us to wonder if Mrs. Obama was making a subtle statement in support of the female presidential candidate. Politics aside, the strapless confection embodied the dignity and poise we so often associate with the First Lady. Here, four ways to emulate her all-white look, even if you aren’t on the White House guest list.
