Disney has confirmed that High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is coming to an end.

The series, which takes the meta approach of having the main cast put on school productions of the High School Musical films, will wrap up with its upcoming fourth season.

A new teaser trailer released by Disney+ shows us that not only are our protagonists set to put on their own version of High School Musical 3: Senior Year, but also that High School Musical 4 is being filmed at their school — which is the same East High in the original trilogy,

The main cast are getting to play extras in the (in-universe) film, while the original cast are returning.

In the trailer, we see Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, Alyson Reed, Bart Johnson and Kayce Stroh.

There's no sign of Zac Efron or Vanessa Hudgens in the trailer, despite them recently sharing photos of themselves at the real-life school used for the films and show. No sign of Ashley Tisdale either. Will they still make surprising cameos? Time will tell.

In a statement announcing the news that the show is ending (via TVLine), High School Musical: The Musical: The Series showrunner Tim Federle said: "After four years at East High, it's time to graduate. This will be our final, endgame season.

"This show brought the most extraordinary cast — and crew, and collaborators — to my life. To the fans, who embraced our super-meta series: we 'don't not love you'. We can't wait to share this epic fourth act with you all."

Since its premiere, the show has made stars out of Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo, whose music career and incredibly huge hit song 'Drivers License' eclipsed the popularity of the show itself back in 2021.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 4 drops on Wednesday, August 9.
