Disney+ has released a teaser trailer for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV series, as well as confirming the premiere date.

The first season of the fantasy show adapts the first of Rick Riordan's books, The Lightning Thief, in which a young boy is accused of stealing Zeus' lightning bolt and discovers he is the son of Poseidon and a human woman, making him a demigod.

This is obviously the same plot as the 2010 Percy Jackson film, since they adapted the same source material, but Riordan has a lot more creative control this time around.

The teaser trailer doesn't really show off much, just a few glimpses of the action, which might be to avoid too many comparisons between the series and the film so soon before release.

Speaking of the release, the teaser confirms that the show will premiere with a double bill on December 20 this year, making it a bit of a Christmas treat. Further episodes will be released weekly.

This TV show adaptation version of Percy Jackson features Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri as our main trio of Percy, Annabeth and Grover, respectively. Megan Mullally, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Toby Stephens also all feature.

This will also be the final on-screen performance for Lance Reddick, who filmed a guest appearance as Zeus, before he sadly passed away in March 2023. It's his voice that can be heard at the end of the teaser saying: "Percy Jackson, we've been expecting you."

There are five books in the original Percy Jackson series, with a sixth due to be released next month. If they get adapted at a rate of one per season, Percy Jackson could be a Disney+ mainstay for the next few years.
