Doctor Who star Bonnie Langford has teased that there will be plenty of “twists and turns” in the show’s two-part finale.

The BBC sci-fi show will air ‘The Legend of Ruby Sunday’ return on Saturday (June 15), which is first of the two-part finale of the 14th series alongside ‘Empire of Death’.

The episode sees Langford reprise her role as Mel Bush once more following her recent appearances in ‘The Power of the Doctor’ and ‘The Giggle’, with the actor stating in a Q+A that the final two episodes of the series were “beautifully written.”

“I couldn’t believe it. I was very excited,” Langford recalled of the moment she first read the scripts. “I was taken aback by the fact my approach to it was very different to how it would have been thirty years before.

“There are things in it that I may have shied away from before. But nowadays, I’m absolutely embracing it with both arms. It’s full of so many twists and a lot of unexpected surprises. It’s written so beautifully.”

Langford, who first appeared on the show in 1986, also talked about the developments for Mel following the reveal that she now works for UNIT, teasing how her character will become involved with the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby (Millie Gibson).

“Mel is still working for UNIT and is on a mission to find out more information about an enterprise they’re a little concerned about,” said Langford. “Mel is trying to infiltrate and do a bit of spying. She tries to get all the intel and report back to UNIT and the Doctor. It’s very layered.

“We also have Ruby’s story unfolding. As we know, she is so desperate to find those missing pieces of the puzzle when it comes to her birth mother. The Doctor is trying to stay away from it because he doesn’t want to mess things up.”

Doctor Who debuts new episodes at midnight on Saturday, airing on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Classic episodes of Doctor Who are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
