Doctor Who's returning showrunner Russell T Davies has confirmed how many episodes there will be in series 15, which will be Ncuti Gatwa's second full series in the lead role.

Writing in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Davies reveals that there will be nine episodes in series 15, and a lot of those scripts have been written.

"Back on the streets of Cardiff, to shoot the NEXT series," Davies wrote. "Five of the next nine scripts, finished and planned. So all of the excitement above is already in the past tense for us…"

It's not known if those nine scripts include the 2024 Christmas special. If that's the case, that puts series 15 on part with series 14's length. If not, then series 15 is one episode longer.

Davies also reveals that Peter Hoar will be returning after helming series 6's 'A Good Man Goes to War'. Since his Who debut, Hoar has worked with Davies on It's a Sin and Nolly, directed multiple Netflix Marvel shows, and directed The Last of Us' standout third episode featuring Bill and Frank's story.

"He could choose to work anywhere in the world – and he chose Cardiff! We win!" Davies wrote.

Alex Pillai, who has worked on shows including Bridgerton and Riverdale, will also work as a director on series 15.

Gatwa will make his debut as The Doctor before the year is out, and his first full episode as The Doctor is due to air during the festive season in late 2023. He'll be joined by cast members including former Coronation Street star Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday.

Of course, we've also got three Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials in November with David Tennant, Catherine Tate and the late Bernard Cribbins all returning.

Doctor Who returns next month on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on Max.
