Doctor Who has unveiled a new version of its iconic theme tune ahead of the show’s return later this year.

The BBC sci-fi series boasts one of the most famous themes of all time, with Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire’s enduring work being performed in various styles.

The series is due to return later in the year for its 60th anniversary specials, and the BBC has now unveiled an updated orchestral style for the song.

Fans took to the comment section to praise the new arrangement, with one writing: “@stewarthend sounds great, could imagine in at the start of the nightly BBC Olympic round up programme.” “I can even hear a little of the tv movie in it absolutely love this version,” added another fan.

With the upcoming specials including a range of stars, pop star Kylie Minogue recently teased the prospect of reprising her role as Astrid Peth, whom she first played in 2007 opposite David Tennant.

“It was so amazing to be in such a beloved show and with David Tennant as The Doctor. Happy days,” she said. “I wouldn't mind if Astrid Peth came back, just saying.”

The upcoming specials will see Ncuti Gatwa make his debut as the iconic Time Lord, and the star revealed that a famous Hollywood actor was a fan of the show.

“I remember Ryan Gosling bounding up to my trailer like, 'Doctor Who is the coolest show in the world man! I’m the biggest fan,' and I was like, 'What the hell?' This show has incredible reach,” revealed Gatwa.

Doctor Who returns later in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on Max.
