Doctor Who star Yasmin Finney has revealed that the pressure from playing Rose is “mind-blowing.”

The actor will make her debut in the BBC sci-fi show later this year, with fans wondering if the character is linked to Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler.

In an interview with Elle, which took place prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Finney commented on the show’s history with the name whilst revealing her own personal experience of being cast.

“I mean it’s obviously got a lot of history,” she said. “To play a character with such history, even just the name, you’ve got that pressure instantly that I didn’t have with [Heartstopper character] Elle. It was a complete mind-blowing experience when I got cast. I can’t really relive it because I was so in the moment.

“At first, [the show] had a code name, and then I found out what the show was and I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’ve just been cast in Doctor Who.’ It’s a trans character as well, and it’s such a blessing as well to be able to play such a monumental character like Rose,” she added.

Ahead of the series’ 60th anniversary specials, Finney also spoke about the experience of filming with returning stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate, who play the Fourteenth Doctor and Donna Noble respectively.

“I didn’t go to drama school, I’m kind of learning on the job,” she revealed. “I went on the set, and I sort of sat back. I just wanted to see how they all do it. It was just amazing to watch TV gold on set.

“David Tennant and Catherine Tate are two amazing, amazing actors. I grew up watching Doctor Who, watching David Tennant and Catherine Tate. That was my era in 2003. It’s crazy to be on a show that deeply has a lot of history with me. It’s just really, really fab.”

Doctor Who returns later in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on Max.
