Doctors star Matthew Chambers has explained his exit from the BBC soap.

The actor, who has played Daniel Granger since 2007, announced on Tuesday (April 4) that he would be leaving the soap, posting a photo of his final script with the caption: “Lastdayitis.”

Following up from his announcement, Chambers explained his exit on Twitter yesterday (April 5), writing: “Just to be absolutely clear. I have had a wonderful time on @BBCDoctors over all 15 years. There is no mystery surrounding my departure, no subterfuge. I am leaving because it was time to go.”

He subsequently posted a follow-up tweet, informing fans that they could get their hands on some merchandise, imploring them to “watch this space.” He also offered a glimpse about the future of the soap, with one fan asking: “Any returning cast ?? Valarie [Pitman] or Julia [Parsons] or others be amazing,” to which he replied: “I couldn’t possibly say…”

Chambers becomes the second Doctors stalwart to leave in a matter of weeks, with Jan Pearson making her final appearance as Karen Hollins after 14 years in the role.

In heartbreaking scenes, Rob (Chris Walker) returned home to see Karin lying unconscious on the sofa, with attempts to revive her proving futile.

The soap returned to the screens after a brief hiatus in February, with two episodes being cancelled at the last minute due to the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

“In light of news in Turkey and Syria, today's billed episode of Doctors will be replaced with Animal Park Heroes,” they wrote at the time of the announcement.

Doctors usually airs on BBC One at 1.45pm from Monday to Thursday and is also available to watch on iPlayer.
