Documentary+ And Rolling Stone Launch New Short Documentary Collaboration, Promising “Cinematic And Provocative” Slate Of Films

FAST channel Documentary+ is partnering with Rolling Stone to present a collection of short documentaries that will begin streaming early in 2024.

The featured docs, covering “a wide range of topics that reflect Rolling Stone’s heritage as the leading voice at the epicenter of entertainment, culture and politics,” will be available on Documentary+ and RollingStone.com. In-depth companion articles written by Rolling Stone editorial staff will appear in the magazine and on the RollingStone website, “offering further analysis, imagery and video, as well as other elements not included in the film,” according to a release about the partnership.

“For decades Rolling Stone has chronicled some of the most interesting people and events of the day, always with a distinct voice and lens,” Justin Lacob, head of Documentary+, said in a statement. “Documentary+ shares Rolling Stone’s passion for sharp cultural commentary, and so we are very excited to partner with them on a slate of impactful, cinematic and provocative documentaries.”

This collaboration allows us to bring these meaningful stories to life cinematically for our global audiences.”

Today’s release did not provide details on individual titles within the slate, but noted they will range “from in-depth artist profiles to more profound examinations of past and current cultural phenomena.”

Documentary+, a branch of the industry-leading documentary studio XTR, launched in 2021 and now reaches over 90 million American households, averaging over 3 million monthly users. It is home to projects from acclaimed filmmakers including Oliver Stone, Alex Winter, Taryn Southern, Roger Ross Williams, Errol Morris, The Ross Brothers, Lauren DeFilippo, and Brett Morgen. It is also the exclusive home to Documentary+ Originals, which includes the News and Doc Emmy-nominated short The Sentence of Michael Thompson.

Rolling Stone Films embraces and expands the mission of Rolling Stone, the company notes, “leveraging a rich archive of IP and original storytelling to illuminate the culture of our times, with premium documentary and scripted films, television series and podcasts.” Recent productions include Supervillain: The Making of Tekashi 6ix9ine for Showtime and Rolling Stone: Stories From the Edge for HBO. Their latest production, Little Richard: I Am Everything, directed by Lisa Cortés, premiered at Sundance in 2023 and is in contention for Academy Award consideration.
