As Jennifer Lopez hits back at claims she's had Botox, here's what she really does to look so good

Over the weekend, Jennifer Lopez hit back at an Instagram follower who commented on her IGTV claiming that her famous glow is down to "tons" of Botox, to which the 51-year-old responded: "for the 500 millionth time, I have never done Botox or any injectables or surgery."

The controversy began after Jennifer posted a video showing how radiant her skin looked after trying the a face mask from her J Lo Beauty range, which launched earlier this month.

Dr. David Jack, who has a medical practice on Harley Street specialising in cosmetic procedures says: 'Because Botox has been around for so long and it's so widely known, people often assume that it is the only thing responsible for firm, youthful looking skin, but there are so many other techniques available now that don't involve Botox or Fillers.

'Some high profile clients, like J-Lo, are moving towards a combination of subtle non-injectable treatments like Morpheus 8, a skin resurfacing procedure, as well as bio-stimulation treatments like Profhilo that uses a high dose of hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin and stimulate collagen and elastin in the deeper levels to improve radiance and overall skin quality.

He adds, 'JLo leads a very healthy lifestyle with a good diet and exercise regime which influences how young a person looks over and above surgery. Botox and fillers still have a valid place in anti-ageing but it's naive to assume that everyone whose skin looks youthful has had these treatments. A holistic combination approach, including skincare, is becoming the new norm for celebrities like Jennifer Lopez as treatment technologies and skincare formulations become evermore sophisticated.'

Botox squabbles aside, this is what we do know about J_Lo ageless beauty routine from her make-up to her fitness and diet and skincare favourites, including That Limitless Glow face mask from J-Lo Beauty.

1. She defies traditional 'over 40' make-up rules

Jennifer Lopez isn't one to follow rules. This is a woman who learnt how to pole dance at 49 for her critically acclaimed role in Hustlers, after all. So it's hardly surprising that she experiments with new make-up looks as frequently as a teenager.

It's pushing these boundaries that prevents Lopez from getting into a make-up rut, one of the most ageing things of all. She knows the insider secret to pulling off daring make-up looks in your 50's is to always keep your base glowy. J-Lo favours a dewy, light foundation application with primers, highlighters and good skincare underneath, which prevents her from ever looking dated.

At The People's Choice Awards Lopez picked up an award looking luminous. Celebrity make-up artist Mary Phillips was behind Jennifer's soft glam look, using mostly Pat McGrath staples like the Skin Fetish Highlighter & Balm Duo, £45, and Skin Fetish Sublime Skin Highlighter, £61, to create that ultimate J-Lo glow. Her go-to hairstylist, Chris Appleton, was responsible for her voluminous, wavy locks, artfully sculpted with the help of products like Color Wow's Cult Favourite Firm + Flexible Hairspray, £22.

2. She employs this fitness and diet regime

For someone with the wealth J-Lo has, it would be easy for Lopez to turn to surgery or body contouring procedures to maintain a youthful body shape, but she works hard for her curves. In January 2019, Lopez took to Instagram to challenge her millions of followers to a '10 day no sugar, no carbs challenge' as she was preparing for her physically demanding role as a New York stripper in the movie Hustlers.

So what's her secret? The mother of two lifts weights with her fiance and former professional athlete, Alex Rodriguez, to maintain lean muscle mass which women, in particular, lose with age - a trick that also helps to boost metabolism.

On top of her daily workouts, Lopez is a regular in the dance studio, as dance is a key part of her job as a performer. She told Hello magazine back in 2016, 'dance has always been a huge part of my life and taking the time to move my body and do something that's so good for me is key to my happiness.' On her free time she continues to stay active and you will often spot Lopez playing outdoor games with her family.

3. She keeps her cool

There's few women who keep their cool-factor going into their fifties, but for J-Lo it's an integral part of her ageless appeal. Lopez doesn't let her age stand in the way. In one of her Instagram posts, above, the entertainer debuted a double knot hairstyle that showcased her baby hairs, which are styled into a wet-look micro fringe, a 90's trend that's resurfacing.

By picking up on micro trends, like styling her hairline, J-Lo maintains a cool edge without looking like she's trying too hard. Besides, putting two-fingers-up at the old-fashioned rules of what's expected of a 50-year-old woman is badass in itself.

4. She focuses on healthy skin

J-Lo isn't afraid to go make-up free and showcase her incredible skin, which she puts down to her own line of J-Lo Beauty skincare, good genes and sleep. In 2014, Lopez revealed to the Today show, 'I have to say I have good genes. My Mom and my Grandma had beautiful skin, so I was blessed with that. I'm fortunate in that way.'

In 2018 she confessed to InStyle magazine that simplicity is her secret weapon and that her regime hasn't really changed since her 20's and 30's. She said, 'it has always been about maintenance. I take more and more pride in maintaining a healthy routine–whether it is how I take care of my skin or my body as a whole. I don’t wear a lot of makeup when not working and am a firm believer in SPF. I try not to stay out in the sun too long.'

Meanwhile, she told Hello! 'I always, always wash my face after a workout. That helps keep my pores clean and my skin feeling healthy. Then I'll usually put on moisturiser and sunscreen, with maybe a little make-up if I'm going out or moisturiser and eye cream if it's the evening.'

The 5 skincare products J-Lo has used

During a 2014 episode of Watch What Happens Live Lopez revealed she also swears by Dr. Haushka's Rose Day Cream. And in 2018, another one of her makeup artists, Mary Phillips, told Well + Good that Lopez is a fan of Sjal Saphir Concentrate.

According to Hello! Lopez's skincare heroes include The Lancer Method cleansing regime and Lancer's Eye Contour Lifting Cream, a range Victoria Beckham has posted about in the past. And in an interview with Popsugar Lopez's longtime makeup artist Scott Barnes, he revealed one of her skincare indulgences was La Mer Moisturizing Cream.

Products aside, Lopez values sleep above all else. 'The number one tip is to always get enough sleep. I can't stress this enough,' she told InStyle. 'I would love to get nine or 10 hours of sleep, but either way, I always make sure I get at least eight.'

Since then, J-Lo has launched her own range of glow-inducing skincare including THAT mask, which has been on our wish list ever since news broke that the singer and actress was launching her own range.

5. She keeps herself grounded

Her Instagram handle reads: 'No matter where I go, I know where I came from,' which sums up Lopez's attitude to life, which is to stay humble and grateful, two internal beauty attributes that give her a sense of confidence and humility.

J-Lo's family life and health are a big part of her happiness, a beauty quality that puts a sparkle in her eyes. 'I am 100 percent convinced that working out is part of what makes me so happy,' she told Hello!

Whether it's taking part in family baseball games in her back yard to posting irreverent Tik Tok videos with her fiance, or having a giggle at work, one thing's for certain, Jennifer Lopez strikes the right balance between hard work and fun - and if you ask us, that's the secret to true age confidence.

She told InStyle, ' I also definitely think beauty comes from within – you have to have keep your mind, soul, body and spirit in sync. I am a firm believer in meditating and when you are happy and feel joy and love, you radiate beauty.'
