Dota 2 Arlington Major Day 5: Talon, Thunder Awaken, Soniqs out as Group Stage ends

The Dota 2 PGL Arlington Major Group Stage concluded as Day 5 came to a close, with Southeast Asia's Talon Esports, South America's Thunder Awaken, and North America's Soniqs Esports getting eliminated as the Playoff brackets were set.

With Group B competition ending on Day 4, Day 5 was devoted solely to the last set of Group A matches.

Eastern European powerhouse Outsiders and Stockholm Major champions OG secured upper bracket berths with sweeps over Talon Esports and Soniqs Esports, respectively.

The results also guaranteed that Talon and Soniqs were eliminated.

Chinese juggernauts PSG.LGD made short work of Thunder Awaken in a 2-0 sweep to finish the Group Stage with a near-perfect 15-1 record and knock their opponents out of the Major.

While Fnatic didn't play a match today, they were pushed down to being Group A's fourth seed by virtue of head-to-head tiebreakers.

Meanwhile, Royal Never Give Up (RNG) and Team Liquid drew their match, 1-1, though the results of the other matches meant that both teams will start the Playoffs from the lower bracket.

The Playoff teams from Group A will be facing off against the Playoff teams from Group B.

Chinese powerhouse Team Aster, rising Western European squad Entity, The International 10 (TI10) champions Team Spirit, and Southeast Asia top seed BOOM Esports qualified for the upper bracket from Group B.

North America's Evil Geniuses (EG) and South America's Beastcoast will start from the lower bracket.

The Arlington Major Playoffs will take place from 9 to 14 August in front of a live audience in the Esports Stadium Arlington. It will follow a double-elimination format with the eight best-performing teams from the Group Stage starting in the upper bracket while the remaining four teams start in the lower bracket.

The upper bracket will have three rounds, with all matches being a best-of-three. The winners of each upper bracket match will advance to the next round while the losers will drop down to the lower bracket.

One team will qualify for the grand finals from the upper bracket.

The lower bracket will have five rounds and will see the losing teams get eliminated. The first round will feature the bottom four performing teams from the group stage along with the four teams that lost their opening matches in the upper bracket.

One team will qualify for the grand finals from the lower bracket.

  • Entity vs OG

  • Outsiders vs Team Spirit

The Arlington Major is the second and final Dota 2 Major of the 2021-2022 Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) season.

The tournament features 17 of the best Dota 2 teams in the world fighting for their slice of the US$500,000 prize pool and 4,570 DPC point pool.

More importantly, the Arlington Major is the last chance for teams to secure a coveted direct invite to The International 11 (TI11), Dota 2's marquee million-dollar world championship tournament.
