RuPaul has called out anti-drag rhetoric after making history during the Emmys.

The drag icon made herstory this year after winning Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program for the eighth year in a row, making the star the most-awarded host ever, as well as the most Emmy wins for a person of colour.

During last night's (January 15) Primetime Emmys, Drag Race walked away with the Outstanding Reality Competition prize, its fifth win in the category, and during the acceptance speech, RuPaul hit out at the conservative backlash to drag queens reading stories at libraries.

“Thank you so much, you lovely, lovely people. We are so honoured to have this award,” the star began. “Listen, you guys are just pure lovely for honouring our show and recognizing all of these queens.

"We have released into the wild hundreds of drag queens and they’re beautiful. On behalf of all of them, we thank you.”

RuPaul went on to say: “If a drag queen wants to read you a story at a library, listen to her because knowledge is power and if someone tries to restrict your access to power, they are trying to scare you. So listen to a drag queen! We love you! Thank you!”

In other Drag Race news, the cast for Drag Race UK vs the World series 2 was recently confirmed, with past UK series queens Jonbers Blonde, Choriza May, Tia Kofi and Gothy Kendoll all back.

Taking part from the rest of the world are Mayhem Miller, Scarlet Envy, Hannah Conda, Arantxa Castilla-La Mancha, Keta Minaj, La Grande Dame and Marina Summers.

RuPaul's Drag Race US airs on MTV in the US and WOW Presents Plus in the UK.
