Driver in Marina Bay Financial Centre car crash arrested for negligence
SINGAPORE — A 25-year-old male driver was arrested after his car mounted the pavement outside the Marina Bay Financial Centre (MBFC) and crashed into a crowd of pedestrians on Monday (15 April) evening.
The driver was arrested for causing grievous hurt by negligent act, said the police. Yahoo News Singapore understands that the man was not a private hire car driver.
His red Mitsubishi Lancer had reportedly been travelling along Central Boulevard before it mounted the pavement at the junction of Marina Way and crashed into a group of pedestrians at MBFC Tower 3 at around 6pm.
Four people – a male passenger in the car and three female pedestrians, all aged between 35 and 46 – were taken while conscious to the Singapore General Hospital.
Eye-witness Jack Tan told Yahoo News Singapore that the car had crashed into five pedestrians, knocking all of them over. One of the pedestrians was his colleague, said the senior security officer, who is in his 50s.
“Her injuries looked serious but she was conscious,” added Tan.
In videos circulating on Facebook, a large crowd could be seen gathered around the vehicle. Parts of the car and a collapsed bollard could be seen near it, with SCDF and police vehicles in the background.
A handful of people were also seen at the grass patch in front of the crashed car and appeared to be offering assistance to others at the scene.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing. If convicted of causing grievous hurt by negligent act, the man can be jailed up to two years or fined up to $5,000, or both.
