Driver warning ahead of major A52 bridge works

Drivers are being warned they could face disruption for a year as work takes place at one of Nottingham's busiest junctions.

The northern bridge in Derby Road, where the A52 meets the A6154 Middleton Boulevard, close to the Queen's Medical Centre, was struck by a lorry carrying an excavator in 2018.

Repairs, utility upgrades and other maintenance works are due to start on Monday 8 July and is expected to last until summer 2025.

One lane on the A52 will be fully closed while other lanes, along with Middleton Boulevard, will be subject to temporary and overnight restrictions.

National Highways said it will be replacing the damaged bridge beam and re-waterproofing the whole structure.

The first three weeks will involve the diversion of a gas main running through the bridge by Cadent, five nights a week, followed by the diversion of electric cables by Western Power Distribution, it added.

The A52 on the approach to the roundabout from the Priory Island will also have lane closures in place.

Emergency vehicles will be escorted through the works area to Queen’s Medical Centre.

A spokesman said the work will occasionally be put on hold to avoid major events in the city such as sporting fixtures, concerts and university open days.

During normal commuter times, drivers have been warned to avoid the area or allow extra time for their journeys.
