PREVIOUSLY, JUNE 11: Dwayne Johnson has sustained a fairly nasty injury to his right elbow on the set of his A24 MMA movie The Smashing Machine, the actor revealed Tuesday on Instagram.

It’s unclear whether Johnson’s injury will impact production, as A24 couldn’t immediately be reached for comment. We’ll update this story with further context should it come in.

“As you guys know, I’m filming a movie called The Smashing Machine,” says Johnson in a recently posted Instagram video, “and anytime your film is called The Smashing Machine, well, you’re kind of going to get smashed up.

“Look at that sucker right there,” he continues, pointing to swelling in his elbow. “It looks like I have a cantaloupe in the bottom of my elbow. I got banged up pretty good today in our scenes, and there might be some soft tissue damage in there.”

Johnson shared that there’s “a lot of fluid” in his elbow at present, which will have to come down before he can get “any kind of MRI.”

“The pain feels pretty good, but all good. It is what it is until it isn’t,” he reflects. “I remember my old man used to say, god rest his soul, ‘The Soulman’ — he was an old-school pro wrestler, old-school bodybuilder — he always used to say, ‘A day without pain is like a day without sunshine, boy’,” Johnson said with a laugh.

No stranger to injuries, the WWE veteran nonetheless asks his followers for “any advanced advice” they might have on “some great anti-inflammatories,” before taking in a dose of his favorite anti-inflammatory, his tequila, Teremana.

Also starring Oscar nominee Emily Blunt and pro boxer Oleksandr Usyk, The Smashing Machine has Johnson portraying Mark Kerr, the legendary MMA fighter from the no-holds-barred era of the UFC, watching as he struggles with addiction, winning, love and friendship at the peak of his career, in the year 2000.

Written and directed by Benny Safdie (Uncut Gems), the drama tipped as an awards hopeful is being produced and financed by A24. Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions are producing alongside Safdie’s Out for the Count banner, Eli Bush and David Koplan. Johnson and Safdie have been collaborating on the project since Johnson’s Seven Bucks acquired rights to Kerr’s story in 2019.
