Dylan O’Brien opens up about his “slut era” inspiring new film Not Okay

Dylan O'Brien has opened up about how his "slut era" inspired his performance in new film Not Okay, and the whole thing is fairly bizarre.

The update follows an April 2022 tweet from Dylan which simply read "slut era" (and obviously had fans obsessed). Now, Dylan has been relating his slut era "energy" to film Not Okay, and it's just as hilarious as it is oddly insightful.

Not Okay dropped on Disney+ last Friday (29th July), with Dylan starring alongside lead Zoey Deutch. The official synopsis reads: "An ambitious young woman finds followers and fame when she poses as the survivor of a deadly attack, but she soon learns that online notoriety comes with a terrible price."

Dylan plays Colin, a micro-influencer in search of fame, and he's now opened up about how his "slut era" message relates to the project. Speaking to E! News, he was asked, "So did your performance inspire your slut era, or did your slut era inspire your performance?"

The actor replied, "Ooh, I love this. I would say that, yeah, the former. My own slut era inspired the performance," going on to crack up laughing. "That clearly has always been inside me somewhere."

Asked whether the slut era has expired or whether it's ongoing, Dylan then answered, "Oh that stays with me."

However, the 30-year-old went on to clarify that "slut era" is in fact more of an "energy" rather than an accurate description of his own life. He explained, "It's just like a concept. It's like an energy. It's also sort of like a prediction of where the world was heading." Laughing again, he added, "Who knew how deep that tweet was? Who knew?"

Well, there you have it.

Not Okay is streaming now on Disney+.
